This low-impact treatment involves expansion of the remaining soft tissue (muscle and skin) following a mastectomy, using a balloon expander. This is gradually filled over a period of three to six months and then replaced by a contoured and generally slightly smaller silicon implant. The final step involves the restoration of the nipple and areola, using tissue from the patient's own body.
A simple implant reconstruction may be performed either at the same time as a breast removal operation (mastectomy) or as a delayed procedure after breast removal, provided no radiotherapy has taken place in the interim.
